Diy Electronics

I'm just getting into electronics and keen to have a play with microcontrollers. I know a lot of people use PICs but my dad's friend recommended Atmel AVRs. I don't know enough to know which are best but was hoping someone could point in the direction of a cheap easy to use AVR programmer for some basic AVRs.

Are there any preferred devices for learning with?
